316L stainless steel is hypoallergenic and a safe bet for the vast majority of people. Here’s the honest part most brands skip: it is not technically “nickel-free.” It contains a small amount of nickel, but it’s tightly bound into the alloy and stays put — which is exactly why it’s so well tolerated. If you have a diagnosed, severe nickel allergy, patch-test first or check with your dermatologist.

Plating is a surface layer, so it wears — anyone promising plating that “never wears off” is selling a fairy tale. With good care, a quality gold-plated finish typically holds up for roughly 6 to 24 months before it starts to thin at high-contact points. Keeping it dry and away from perfume stretches it toward the longer end.

Keep it dry, put jewelry on last (after lotion and perfume dry down), wipe it with a soft cloth after a sweaty day, and store it dry and separate. That’s most of the job. Full routine on the Materials & Care page.

Solid 316L stainless steel handles water and sweat well, but chlorine and salt water are rough on any jewelry — take pieces off before the pool or ocean. For gold-plated pieces, always remove them before water to protect the finish.
